PHENOMENAL PACIFIC REGION

The Pacific Region was first identified as the Western Region in 1933. The region’s first Regional Director was R. Lillian Carpenter. In 1937, the first chapter, Xi Alpha, was chartered on the campus of Occidental College, in Los Angeles, California. The second chapter in the region was Gamma Beta, chartered at the University of California, Berkeley in 1942. Gamma Beta was unique, as its membership consisted of different colleges in Northern California colleges until 1983. The first graduate chapter, Beta Eta Zeta of Los Angeles, helped host the first Grand Boulé in the Pacific Region in 1947. Gamma Sigma Zeta, also of Los Angeles, was chartered a few years later. In 1955, the Sorors of Beta Eta Zeta and Gamma Sigma Zeta voted to merge into what is now Alpha Psi Zeta

chapter. In 1996, the region expanded to Asia with the chartering of the Pi Eta Zeta Chapter in Seoul, Korea with Regional Director Laura Farwell and Southern California State Director Beatrice Nelson conducting the chartering ceremony. Two more Asia-Pacific chapters, Phi Eta Zeta and Omega Theta Zeta, were chartered in Japan by Regional Director Nui Brown.

Following the administration of R. Lillian Carpenter, there has been 18 Pacific Regional Directors:

The Phenomenal Pacific Region has provided over 90 years of unwavering support to the tenants of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. The name “Phenomenal” was adopted from the poem by Maya Angelou, Phenomenal Woman, as a declaration of our commitment to Finer Womanhood; in character, community service and our educational pursuits. This motto was the brainchild of Stacye Montez who hails from San Francisco, California, was the thirteenth Regional Director of the Pacific Region, and served as the Sorority’s Executive Director from 2010 – 2015.

The Pacific Region is the home to prominent members of the organization including the 23rd International President, Sheryl P. Underwood, who served from 2008 to 2012. We are proud of our legacy of leadership with several members serving the sorority in elected and appointed positions on the international level.

As a region, we are excited and anticipate continual growth and great service, with the quote that is at the forefront of our minds... "Every day is a new Possibility."
